Montenegro’s former Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic offers a firsthand account of his recent visit to Washington—his first since President Trump returned to office. Through political diary excerpts, Abazovic provides an unfiltered look at diplomatic conversations, Montenegro’s evolving role in global affairs, and the challenges and opportunities facing the Western Balkans.
No Middle Ground
Washington, D.C. – February 4, 2025
This is my first visit to the United States since the Trump administration took office. In conversations with a wide range of people from across the political spectrum, one conclusion seems inescapable: either President Trump will make significant strides on economic spending, or this administration will disappoint. There is absolutely no middle path! It’s Trump or nothing!
Trump has shattered the notion of a predictable foreign policy.

There is, understandably, a great deal of hope and expectation among Americans. Yet, there are also concerns that these hopes may prove short-lived. What is certain, however, is that Trump has already had an unprecedented effect on the global stage. His ability to command global attention is unparalleled, and in doing so, he has assumed responsibility for issues that extend far beyond America’s direct involvement.
In the first two weeks of his presidency, Trump has shattered the notion of a predictable foreign policy. His decisions—many of which have sparked considerable debate—have sent a clear message: expect the impossible.
Montenegro’s Moment in Washington
Washington, D.C. – February 5, 2025
After meeting with several senators on the Hill, I got a real sense of optimism when it comes to Montenegro. Over the years, my government worked hard to put our country on the map—not an easy task for the smallest nation in the region. But through determination and reform, under my leadership, we delivered historic progress in tackling corruption, cracking down on narcotics trafficking, and curbing the smuggling of illegal cigarettes. These efforts have not gone unnoticed—there is clear recognition of both our political and economic advancements.
For many in Washington, the Balkans is no longer viewed through the lens of past disappointments but as a region of opportunity. There is growing interest in deepening engagement, and for the first time, serious discussions are taking place about return visits.
One idea that’s come up is organizing a prayer breakfast in Montenegro—an event that would not only elevate our country’s standing but also strengthen friendships and partnerships in a meaningful way. The future’s looking bright.
Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast
Washington, D.C. – February 6, 2025, 8 AM
Donald Trump’s speech at the National Prayer Breakfast was, as the Americans might say, something else. It left no one unmoved.

For me, the standout moment was when Trump, in his signature bravado style, declared: “You have a president again.” A none-too-subtle swipe at his predecessors, whom he clearly regards as having been either too distracted or too disinterested to properly champion this event. But the contrast wasn’t just in rhetoric—it was in approach.
Trump is clearly a man of faith, for whom religious principles hold genuine significance. He seamlessly integrates their universal teachings with a modern, pragmatic vision, making them relevant to today’s political and social landscape.

And then came the moment of sheer anticipation turned reality. Trump arrived in person at the Washington Hilton, defying those who doubted he would attend. It was yet another example of how he’s rewriting the rulebook on political communication by forging direct connection with the people. And once again, America demonstrated what we all know to be true: when it comes to international authority, sheer influence, and an unrivaled ability to set the global agenda, it has no equal. America remains in a league of its own.
The Western Balkans on Trump’s Agenda
Washington, D.C. – February 6, 2025, 1 PM
As I left Washington Hilton, my thoughts turned to Trump’s record in the Western Balkans.
During his first term, Trump championed efforts to resolve the region’s long-standing disputes—a mission that has been at the core of my political career. My philosophy has always been clear: sowing division is easy, but the true measure of statesmanship is bringing people together, reconciling nations and building bridges that stand the test of time. That is the kind of politics that lasts. I have every hope that the Trump administration will take up this mantle, pushing for lasting, sustainable solutions in the complex relations between Belgrade and Pristina.
For us, in Montenegro, regional stability is not a diplomatic talking point; it is a matter of national security. I stand ready to assist in any way possible.
Enter Richard Grenell

Trump envoy for special missions Richard Grenell is someone with deep experience in the politics of the Western Balkans. He understands the complexities, the history, and the key players involved. For him, there are no surprises. More importantly, I believe he has a genuine commitment to seeing through the work he started.

Of course, the challenges in this region are well known. There are no quick fixes, and progress will require patience, diplomacy, and strategic engagement. But what is certain is that President Trump has, in Richard Grenell, a figure who knows the political landscape, the opportunities, and key players who can help drive meaningful solutions.
Grenell has already in his early days on the job delivered results for the United States. I have no doubt that the Balkans will soon command his attention once again. With the right leadership and a clear strategy, there is a real opportunity to move forward in a way that benefits the entire region.
My Vision for Montenegro 2030
When it comes to relations between Serbs and Albanians, I return to a simple truth: we have tried everything—wars, division, conflict, refugees, economic blockades. But there is one thing we have yet to fully embrace: cooperation. It is time. And when we finally commit to this path, I have no doubt that it will be a victory for all.
This is a time for action. This is a time for leadership.
Former PM of Montenegro Dritan Abazovic
We are taking real steps to clean up the region—not just by addressing nationalism, but by tackling organized crime and corruption. The years ahead will be critical, and we cannot afford to waste them. Montenegro has ambitious plans for the future, and soon we will present our roadmap for: Montenegro 2030. Our vision is clear—to become a strong, stable, prosperous country, a full member of the European Union, and a place where every citizen has a chance to thrive.
And here’s the truth—we can’t do it alone. The United States remains an essential partner in our aspirations. With strong alliances, a clear direction, and the political will to push forward, there is nothing we cannot achieve. This is a time for action. This is a time for leadership. And I am confident that, working together, we can achieve something remarkable.
