“I just want all of you to imagine yourselves as foreign correspondents. How would you cover this?” Senator Brian Schatz’s ( D-Hawaii) challenge to the congressional press corps on Monday was to recognize the extraordinary moment unfolding in Washington.

The issue at hand? Senate Democrats vs. the government special employee and the president’s closest ally—Elon Musk.

Led by Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrats are, in their words, “pulling the fire alarm” over what they call a “hostile takeover” of the federal government—not by a political faction, but by Musk and DOGE.

“Before our very eyes,” Schumer warned, “an unelected shadow government is conducting a hostile takeover of the federal government.”

This past Friday, Schumer claimed, DOGE had “forcefully” accessed the Treasury Department’s payment systems, gaining an unprecedented window into the nation’s most sensitive financial data.

The revelation that Musk holds a security clearance and serves as a “special government employee” has added fuel to Democratic fears. CBS reported that Musk has an office in the West Wing and is present at the White House on an “irregular” basis. The White House confirmed his government role status to CNN.

On Monday, President Donald Trump sought to quell critics, stating, Elon reports directly to him and won’t do anything without prior approval.

“We’ll give him the approval when appropriate, where not appropriate, we won’t. But he reports in, and it’s something that he feels very strongly about,” Trump said. “If there’s conflict, then we won’t let him get near it.”

But with Musk’s expanding role inside the administration and his now-confirmed-by-the-president access to federal financial systems, concerns over transparency and oversight continue to mount in Washington.

Senator Schumer: DOGE is not a real government agency

Do Democrats trust Trump’s assurances that Musk is under his direct oversight?

It does not appear so.

The problem? Democrats do not hold the majority. They need Republicans to join them.

Schumer called on the Treasury Secretary to “revoke” Musk’s access to the payment system immediately. “If not,” he warned, “Congress must act.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Schumer are now working on legislation to “stop unlawful meddling” in Treasury’s financial systems.

“DOGE is not a real government agency,” Schumer emphasized. “It has no authority to make spending decisions. It has no authority to shut programs down or ignore federal law. To give them a chokehold on Treasury payments is outlandishly dangerous. It’s like putting a tiger into a petting zoo and hoping for the best. It’s impossible to overstate that this is playing with fire.”

Senator Murray: Republican colleagues have to say Enough!

Senator Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, took a direct swipe at the Trump administration, calling it “the most corrupt administration in our history.”

Her position is that even if Musk only has “viewing access” to Treasury’s payment system, that is not acceptable either. “All Elon has to do is say, ‘Oh, they’re woke,’ and he can convince Trump to illegally cut off those funds.”

She made it clear “That is not how things work in America.”

Murray added, “We have a democracy, we have checks and balances, where the president is accountable to Congress.”

Democrats, she said, are preparing to push back. “We’ll speak out, we will press this administration. We will open investigations, and we will demand accountability.”

The one tool they lack? The majority.

“That means our Republican colleagues have to say Enough,” Murray said. “We need them to join us. We need them to stand up to the corruption and lawlessness.”

Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), the top Democrat on the Finance Committee, said that according to his sources, Musk apparently “doesn’t agree” with the Treasury secretary. He also raised concerns about Musk’s potential interference in the administration’s new tax-filing system, Direct File.

“The Musk hatchet brigade has infiltrated a gold mine of data that every foreign spy and every corrupt actor would love to see. It is a prescription for nightmare,” said Wyden.

He also suggested that Musk’s financial ties to foreign governments may have previously disqualified him from obtaining a security clearance. “Now he’s got his hands on the personal data of hundreds of millions of Americans.”

Senator Warren: We all now work for Elon Musk

Senator Elizabeth Warren delivered one of the most searing indictments.

“It appears that we all now work for Elon Musk,” she said.

Furious, she continued: “This is one guy who decides who gets paid and who does not.”

Warren called on Americans to “wake up” and use “every tool” at their disposal to fight back.

Senator Brian Schatz echoed her warning, accusing Musk and DOGE of bypassing Congress and attempting to modify federal spending laws unilaterally.

“If you don’t like a spending provision, propose a bill, pass a law,” Schatz said. “That is so foundational to the American system of government that I don’t want to race past this idea that you can wave away a federal law because you don’t like it.”

Schatz, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee who is placing a blanket hold on all of President Trump’s State Department nominees, left no doubt where he stands. “This is not some minor transgression. This is an illegal act.”

With his presence in the West Wing, access to Treasury systems, and direct influence over White House policy, Elon Musk is no longer just a billionaire —he is now part of the machinery of Trump government.

This is an illegal act.

Senator Brian Schatz

Will Congress rein him in? Or is this the new reality of power in Washington?

For now, the curious case of Elon Musk, special government employee, continues.
