being present

Being present is the most certain path to a stress-free life.

Being present is the most certain path to a stress-free life.

We live under the constant flow of information from social media, the Internet, and TV.  Having to multitask in order to stay above all requests coming our way, makes it very difficult to stay present and focused. However, these proven tips will instantly bring peace and calmness into your life.

Become the Observer of Your Life

Yoga and some eastern philosophies teach us to detach ourselves from our emotions and events happening to us and around us. They teach us to become “the Observers” of our lives. This is a non-judgmental, non-criticizing way of seeing.

It is good to take a step back and observe life from a greater perspective, which brings the sense of a larger meaning. It also brings peace of mind that everything will work out in the end.

Then again, there are times we should stay pretty much involved and “attached.” Those are the moments when we are happy and feeling satisfied. Moments that naturally make us feel grateful.

Both of these approaches are keeping us present here and now. It is  about learning to balance between the two. That is keeps us in a constant state of bliss.

Whenever you have a minute do the following exercise to bring your focus to the present moment:

Close your eyes, take a deep breathe in, forget the world. Breathe out, open your eyes. Look at your hands – aren’t they marvelous  Look, you can grab things, touch somebody, climb a tree, hold a pen and write a love letter, you can wave, blow kisses, hold a child, cook a meal and all of that with just two hands and ten fingers.

Now look up. See the world around you. But truly see it for what it is, don’t judge, observe. Marvel the miracle of life happening around you. Nothing matters but the present moment.

Being present means living in the now

Whether it is washing the dishes or having a drink with your friends, stay in the moment. Feel it.

One of the steps I took toward being present was to almost completely stop taking photos. I realized that by the time I take out my phone and take a decent photo, my window to enjoy whatever I wanted to photograph was gone. I chose to be present instead of collecting memorabilia.

Being present means living in the now. There is no point to living in the past since there is nothing we can do to bring it back, or to change things we feel apologetic for. On the other hand thinking about the future only brings us into a state of fear and anxiousness, since we don’t know what tomorrow brings. Even the most certain things can change in an instant.

The only thing we are left with, the only thing that is definite is the present moment and the breath we are drawing right this instant. No matter what is happening around you – be there, be an observer of the things happening to you and most of all in you. Stop and just breathe.
