Good Morning DC. This Sunday, the world has changed, it is not the same as it was just a week ago.
This morning, the UK’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that seven people died in crowds near the airport in Kabul. Every single journalist in Kabul reports that the situation is deteriorating, not improving, seven days in and it is only going to get worse.
President Biden’s universally acclaimed poor decision-making has created a significant international security and humanitarian disaster, disillusioned our staunchest allies and emboldened our enemies. This is something that I discussed at length on Twitter.
The Emperor has no clothes, but no one dare tell him. Tony Blair went ballistic yesterday, calling Biden’s withdrawal imbecilic and completely avoidable, but avoided personal criticism of the 46th President himself.
Tony Blair is one of the rare old-guard leaders of the left, still able to see a global picture and think through the prism of the international grand strategy. Biden can’t see the wood from the trees and has allowed his rushed deadlines and political laurels to override not only the intelligence advice he was given, but also the medium and long term interests of America, NATO and Western civilization.
Intelligence is only helpful if interpreted correctly, otherwise it’s just a data dump, and I am afraid that Biden has surrounded himself with yes men ( and women) who only say what he wants them to say and only see in the reports what he wants them to see. This in part explains the biggest foreign policy failure since the Appeasement of Nazi Germany before the Second World War.
Was all the blood and treasure invested in Afghanistan wasted? Yes, because Biden let everything revert back to square one, and the Taliban now control Afghanistan. Imagine how our allies feel, who gave their blood and treasure also, entering a conflict in support of the US which was attacked on 9/11.
Unfortunately for the free world Biden is a low-quality politician who was plunged into the American presidency as the only viable alternative to Donald Trump. Still, he proved to be incapable of making grand strategy decisions. His intention may have been noble, but the execution is staggering and hard to comprehend .
As the world can see now Biden was a man elected to the highest office because of who he wasn’t not who he was. And now we are all going to pay the price for it.
Biden’s second address was just like his first a car crash. In fact, a multiple car pile up and subsequent fire.
Trump spoke last night at the rally in Alabama. He talked about Biden’s debacle in Afghanistan, the one he said the ‘world has not seen’. Increasing numbers are agreeing with him publicly, even more privately.
Biden’s action have reduced the standing of not only the US but the whole Western world. By running out on Afghanistan, Biden might find that he is running out of friends and America is running out of allies.
Why the US military was allowed to leave Afghanistan before everyone was evacuated is a question an independent commission should investigate.
Von Der Leyen called on all countries to help out the people of Afghanistan. Spain’s government has already taken in some evacuees.
Israel bombed Gaza as a response to violent demonstrations. Germany has only 25 days ahead of the elections, but Armin Laschet, endorsed by Merkel, is falling behind. Need more political turmoil in one week?
And that’s a wrap for this Sunday morning, August 22, 2021. Good Morning DC will be back in September, with some new programming announcements at SALT conference in New York City. In the meantime, stay in touch with all the things Washington DC by following our coverage at www.thepavlovictoday.com.
