At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, the G7 Foreign Ministers have jointly called on Russia to “fully clarify” the circumstances surrounding the death of Alexei Navalny.

In a strongly-worded statement issued by Italy, the G7 expresses their “outrage” at the passing of Navalny while in one of the toughest prisons in Russia.

Foreign ministers assert that Navalny was “unjustly sentenced for legitimate political activities and his fight against corruption.”

In addition to demanding clarity on Navalny’s death, the G7 also called on Russia to cease its “unacceptable persecution” of political dissent. They condemned the systematic repression of freedom of expression and the unduly limitation of civil rights within the country.
