During day one of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, former first lady Michelle Obama made her pitch for why Joe Biden is the right person for America, but more so why Trump is wrong for the nation.

Ms. Obama recognized that many Americans are hesitant in tuning into a party’s convention or to engage in politics overall. However, she went on to explain why the job of a president is important, saying, “a president’s words… can start wars or broker peace… you simply cannot fake your way through this job.” The former first lady continued, “being president does not change who you are, it reveals who you are… a presidential election can reveal who we are.”

Michelle Obama: “Being President does not change who you are, it reveals who you are”

Michelle Obama slammed the President for his inability to put himself “in someone else’s shoes”, stating, “whenever we look to this office for leadership or consolation or any semblance of steadiness, what we get is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy.”

The former first lady also boldly stated that the America that will be displayed in history books is, “a nation that’s underperforming not simply on matters of policy, but on matters of character. And that’s not just disappointing, it’s downright infuriating.” She later went on to say that Trump is “clearly in over his head… he simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.”

With reference to her famous “if they go low, we go high” quote, Michelle Obama said that many people asked her over the Trump term “when others are going so low, does going high still really work?” She then assured that “going high is the only thing that works.” She ignited listeners to join forces, saying, “if we want to survive, we’ve got to find a way to live together and work together across our differences.”

Michelle Obama: “If You Think Things Cannot Possibly Get Worse, Trust Me They Can”

Michelle Obama warned listeners tuning into her speech that if there is one thing they take away from her speech, it is this: “if you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me they can, and they will if we don’t make a change in this election.”

She encouraged voters to cast their ballots for Biden “like our lives depend on it”. Ms. Obama went on to show her immense support for the former vice president, saying, “I know Joe. He is a profoundly decent man, guided by faith. He was a terrific vice president… and he listens! He will tell you the truth… and he will govern as someone who’s lived a life that the rest of us can recognize.”

Obama acknowledged that Biden is imperfect, but explained that there is no perfect candidate for president. She vouched for Joe Biden’s ability to grow and admit when he is wrong. “Joe Biden has served this nation his entire life without ever losing sight of who he is… he has never lost sight of who we are,” Michelle Obama said.

The former first lady ended her speech on a moving note, stating, “if we want to be able to look our children in the eye after this election, we have got to reassert our place in American history, and we have got to do everything we can to elect my friend Joe Biden as President of the United States.”
