The FBI has launched an investigation into what it describes as a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, following a shooting incident Sunday afternoon at Trump International Golf Club.

Around 1:30 p.m., gunshots were fired while Trump was playing golf, authorities said. Secret Service agents engaged the suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, who was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. The individual fled from the bushes in a Nissan vehicle, but was later apprehended thanks to a witness who took a photograph of the suspect and the vehicle’s license plates, according to law enforcement sources.

Authorities said evidence found in the bushes, including a GoPro camera, suggests the perpetrator intended to film the attack. The shooter was positioned 300 to 500 yards away from Trump, within effective range of the weapon.

“In the bushes, where this guy was, is an AK-47 style rifle with a scope; two backpacks, which were hung on the fence and had ceramic tile in them; and a GoPro,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

Trump’s campaign has confirmed that the former president is safe.

This marks the second time Trump has been targeted, with the first incident occurring in Butler, Pennsylvania. The FBI and Secret Service stated that Trump is under “high level” threat.

This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
