Ever since the “Blank Space” singer attended City Chiefs game to cheer on the tight end in September many have been enticed by the whirlwind romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Since then, the internet has been flooded with rumors about their relationship, sparking a widespread obsession. Fans flocked to Twitter and Reddit shipping the relationship calling it “end game vibes.” This also includes daily talk shows discussions about their partnership transcending into the political sphere with a plethora of conspiracy theories revolving around the 2024 presidential election.

The media attention continued during the Super Bowl game, as Swift watched her boyfriend play and win the game against the San Francisco 49ers from the Skybox.

“I would have liked a couple more shots of what was going on in that Skybox…We want to see Taylor Swift and what’s going on in that skybox and then you make out on the field and the world is watching. This is mind blowing attention. This is really worldwide,” said Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show.

“They gotta get married. There’s no, there’s no turning back now. They can’t break up. They gotta get married. There’s got to be a payoff.”

Karma is the guy on the Chiefs

As a new cultural phenomenon, what sets this romance apart from countless other celebrity couples that have graced the cover of tabloids and inundated our social media feeds? How have Kelce and Swift captured the public imagination?

“They’re two of the best in their respective fields and so far have only ever looked happy and in love while in the public eye. I think for people who love them, they represent a kind of unique purity in a relationship before the gray settles in and it’s kind of an easy escape into a real life fairytale for the time they’re watching them,” said Taylor Swift fan Jules Rice told The Pavlovic Today.

We’ve been following their every move from tuning into Sunday night football to watch Swift cheer from the sidelines. Swift has attended a total of 13 games, including the Super Bowl. Remarkably, the Kansas team has won 10 of those games, suggesting Swift may be a good luck charm.

Kelce accompanied the singer to Argentina for her ‘The Eras Tour’. During her show in Buenos Aires, she modified the lyrics of “Karma” to reference the tight end signing “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me”, and after the concert we witnessed them sharing a kiss backstage.

“For those of you who haven’t seen all the videos of me on your TikTok and Instagram feed, I was enjoying myself down there in Buenos Aires,” Travis recalled. “The show was even more electric knowing that I had a little bit more to enjoy it for,” said Kelce on his “New Heights” podcast.

Swift and Biden

The political conversations that this relationship has prompted revolve around the 2024 election. Recently, a Monmouth University Poll reported that nearly one in five Americans believe the singer Taylor Swift is part of a conspiracy to help President Joe Biden win the 2024 election, including theories promulgated by MAGA Republicans revolving around the Super Bowl. These conspiracy theories suggest that Biden rigged the Super Bowl, as a Dark Brandon meme circulated online which showed the president with laser eyes along with a caption that said “Just like we drew it up.”

According to The New York Times, these conspiracy theories include Swift being an agent of the Pentagon and that she’s preparing her fan base to endorse Biden, and that the couple is working “to boost the N.F.L. or Covid vaccines or Democrats or whatever.”

“I wonder who’s going to win the Super Bowl next month. And I wonder if there’s a major presidential endorsement coming from an artificially culturally propped-up couple this fall. Just some wild speculation over here, let’s see how it ages over the next 8 months,” said Vivek Ramaswamy, former Republican 2024 presidential candidate.

Understanding this particular fascination for Republicans is difficult to parse out. Swift has her musical roots in country, which is a genre popular among MAGA supporters, but her music isn’t politically motivated, and even in her personal life she’s only endorsed center-left positions.

Also, Swift’s relationship can be perceived as American as it gets, considering she is dating a Super Bowl ring winning football star, in a country that idolizes the sport.

Maybe they’re rejecting their football icon dating a celebrity that has endorsed Biden in 2020 or maybe they’re rejecting Swift because of former President Donald J. Trump’s comments. Trump made a statement claiming he was the reason for her financial success and called another Biden endorsement  “disloyal to the man who made her so much money.”

A modern-day fairy tale and a happily ever after

On the cultural front the explanation for this intense media frenzy could be that Kelce represents a significant departure from Swift’s previous partners, and that this time around she finally found the right person. While Swift has predominantly dated singers and actors like Harry Styles, Calvin Harris, Tom Hiddleston, and others, Kelce, despite being a celebrity in his own right, embodies a distinct departure with his athlete persona from her usual romantic interests.

Unlike her previous relationships, Kelce fulfills the very fantasy Swift writes about her songs, which fans describe as her chance to find everlasting love. An example of a romantic gesture that drove fans wild is when Kelce expressed disappointment on his podcast “New Heights” when he missed his opportunity to give Swift a friendship bracelet, a swiftie tradition, with his number on it before Arrowhead Stadium stop for the “Era Tours” concert.

“Well, I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Travis confessed. “So I was a little butthurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her,” said Kelce on “New Heights”.

Swift called the gesture “metal as hell” at a later time.

The combination of a football star and a beautiful girl is an American archetype that Swift and Kelce embody effortlessly, portraying them as quintessential American sweethearts. This relationship represents the classic high school cheerleader dating the quarterback–femininity meeting masculinity.

“They carry a nostalgia of a retro Americana couple,” Taylor Swift fan Erica Fotus told The Pavlovic Today.

People seem to be craving this traditional American relationship at a time of political discontent, returning to a simpler time where Swift’s and Kelce’s romance can represent something more conventional. It offers a glimpse of escapism, indicating that a fairytale romance might also be within reach for fans too.

The combination of a football star and a beautiful girl is an American archetype that Swift and Kelce embody effortlessly, portraying them as quintessential American sweethearts.

Couples nationwide share an obsession with this type of pairing because it bridges diverse interests. One partner might enjoy a NFL RedZone subscription while the other is captivated by Swiftie lore. Following this celebrity couple together can bring them closer to each other.

“It has connected more fans of Taylor’s and more fans of the NFL in some ways. To see that they have a connection, now they have a connection to our game and to Taylor… I think it’s great for the league to have that kind of attention. So, we welcome it,” said  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell last year.

Chiefs merchandise sales, sponsorship, ticket sales, and social media followers have seen a rise in sales, which has been dubbed “The Taylor Effect.” This includes a massive spike in NFL viewership, with more women turning into the games just to watch their favorite celebrity cheering from the stands.

According to Eric Smallwood’s, president of Apex Marketing Group, research Swift brought in as much as $331.5 million of equivalent brand value to the Chiefs since the inception of Swift’s and Kelce’s relationship.

Some find themselves enthralled with their relationship because Kelce seems supportive of Swift’s success, unlike her previous relationships which may have felt like they were competing with her. In contrast, Swift’s boyfriends couldn’t provide her with the bare minimum, as Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t make an appearance at the singer’s 21st birthday and shortly after breaking up with her.

We’re just two people supporting each other and having fun with it.

Even John Mayer responded cruelly to Swift’s song “Dear John” about their relationship, where she sang “To be played by your dark, twisted games when I loved you so? I should’ve known.” Mayer told Us Weekly that he was “humiliated” by the track, calling it “cheap songwriting.”

Kelce has shown interest in Swiftie traditions as mentioned previously is an inherently romantic gesture. And who doesn’t love a supportive boyfriend? This isn’t just a one way street, Kelce expressed on The Pat McAfee Show how he “loves” the support Swift shows him.

“I love it when Taylor comes and supports me and enjoys the game with the fam and friends,” Kelce said. “It’s been nothing but a wonderful year, man.”

Kelce continues, “We’re just two people supporting each other and having fun with it, man.”

Many suggest that Kelce could be Swift’s fairytale ending that she continues to write songs about.

“As much as I love them together, I do also find the obsession a bizarre cultural phenomenon,” said Fotus.
