President Biden spoke to Rishi Sunak this evening, Downing Street has confirmed.

Biden took an opportunity to congratulate Sunak on becoming the UK’s prime minister, a historic event he referred to yesterday as “a groundbreaking milestone.”

During the call, Biden reaffirmed the US-UK “special relationship” and “agreed on the huge strength of relationship.”

Regarding geopolitical cooperation, Biden and Sunak talked about the Indo-Pacific and joint efforts to counter China’s “malign influence.”

The two leaders also spoke about their unwavering commitment to Ukraine and making sure “Putin fails in this war.”

Sunak and Biden also touched upon the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Their first in-person bi-lateral meeting will be at G20 in Indonesia next month.

The White House is yet to release a readout of Biden’s call with Sunak.
