President Biden said that he believes Senator McConnell is a “rational Republican.” Senator McConnell said on Tuesday that the group of lawmakers that are talking about guns in the wake of Uvalde are seeing the problem as “mental illness and school safety.”

Does the President agree that “mental illness and school safety” is the problem here?

Press Secretary Jean-Pierre said that Biden “believes that there are some rational Republicans in the Senate who can come together and work on a bipartisan bill. And Mitch McConnell is one of those — is one of those folks.”

Jean-Pierre said the President will continue to call for Congress to “take action” and that the White House is in “regular contact on negotiations.”

As to the timing when the President will get involved directly in these negotiations, Jean-Pierre said, “When the time comes, he will get involved.”
