Benefits of Meditation

One of the most important benefits of meditation lies in the ability to shift our focus onto ourselves, an ability to turn our gaze inward.

We are raised in a society that brings focus to external events, to the occurrences that ensue outside of our internal thoughts. We are taught to hastily react, rather than to mindfully respond. We place too much significance in the appearance of things, in an attempt to conceptualize the outward image of ourselves and others. We are trying to get to know the world around us, to get to know the people in our life, but in this process we often fail to get to know ourselves. Focusing too much on the outward causes us to forget that each of us are the center of our own lives. We somehow remain strangers to ourselves, oblivious to the fact that the world appears in a certain light because of the specific nature of our own being. It is our inner world that gives form, shape, and color to the outside universe. If we are constantly gripped by fear, the world may appear both mysterious and terrifying. However if we believe that anything is possible, we will only see miraculousness of life.

One of the most important benefits of meditation lies in the ability to shift our focus onto ourselves, an ability to turn our gaze inward. Meditation helps us become acquainted with ourselves, we are finally able to hear that deeply hidden inner voice that knows the truth of who we really are. This voice can guide and navigate us through the adventure called life, while staying true to our higher self.

Our life becomes about us as opposed to the outside world being all about us.

Another benefit of meditation is that the practice teaches us to discipline our mind. With meditation as a tool we are able to take control of the unruly thoughts. We no longer feel as if there is some strange force we continue to battle and unfortunately lose every time. We take control and become the captain of our own ship. It is a strenuous journey but a very rewarding one.

 Benefits of meditation are:

  • Increased focus
  • Meditation lessens anxiety, stress, and impulsivity which in turn improves your problem solving and decision making
  • Improves your mood, increases optimism and self-esteem
  • Decreases pain that is tension related, relaxes muscles and increases energy levels
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved immune system and overall health

To fully experience these benefits, meditation has to be practiced and incorporated into your everyday life. Set aside at least 10 minutes each day for a steady meditation practice. Choose a time of day that you will be bothered by the least amount of distractions and try to practice at the same time every day.

There is no concrete answer that will explain the best method, time, and place to meditate. Choose the meditation practice that suits your personality and start meditating today. Practicing should not be viewed as tiresome duty, rather a small portion of time you think of as a gift to yourself. Meditation is a free tool that can help improve the quality of your life. All you have to do is use it.
