They call it the Eternal City and say all roads lead there. Of course, we’re talking about beautiful Rome. Many Serbian tourists have headed toward Rome this summer, so it’s worth reminding ourselves why Italy’s capital is a place that truly needs to be seen and experienced.
The Colosseum, Vatican, Sistine Chapel…
Every inch of Rome exudes history, and each step through its streets offers a new opportunity to appreciate architecture and art. There’s the iconic Colosseum, a symbol of Rome, as well as the exquisite Sistine Chapel, constructed between 1473 and 1481 and painted by Michelangelo. The Borghese Gallery is also a must-see, featuring “neither a smaller museum nor a greater concentration of masterpieces.” Tickets, which cost about 30 euros, often require booking months in advance. Those who do get in will be able to see the works of Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael, and other artists.
Toss a Coin into the Trevi Fountain and Wish for a Safe Return to Rome
Rome is also a city of fountains, with more than 2,000 of them, the most famous of which is undoubtedly the Trevi Fountain. Built in the 18th century, it’s considered the most celebrated fountain in the world. According to legend, tossing a coin into it brings good luck, with the hope that the traveler will someday return to Rome. Tradition dictates that the coin be tossed with the right hand over the left shoulder. Many films have featured the Trevi Fountain, one of the most famous being “La Dolce Vita” (The Sweet Life) from 1960, directed by Federico Fellini, in which Anita Ekberg wades sensually in the fountain while being admired by Marcello Mastroianni. Each year, coins worth about 1 million euros are tossed into the fountain, with the money used to help the poor in Italy and other countries.
Famous Squares
One of the most famous squares in Rome is Piazza del Popolo, surrounded by three churches, including the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, built on the tomb of Emperor Nero. Many tourists say Piazza Navona is the most beautiful square in Rome; it’s full of cafes and restaurants and adorned with three fountains. Listing all of Rome’s magnificent squares would take a long time, and discovering them is a true tourist adventure. We’ll mention just one more, Piazza del Campidoglio, a square designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century, located on one of the seven hills on which Rome stands.
