Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is making a renewed push to secure the unwavering backing of the United States, stressing that he remains deeply grateful for American support in Ukraine’s war with Russia.
“We are grateful for all the support we have received from the United States. There hasn’t been a single day when we haven’t felt grateful. Because this is gratitude for the preservation of our independence.,” Zelenskyy said in his Sunday statement , as uncertainty grows over the breakdown in diplomatic talks between Trump and Zelenskyy last week.
The British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, meanwhile, has emerged as a key figure in Europe’s efforts to build a lasting peace settlement. With no agreement yet on what a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia might look like, the UK is spearheading diplomatic efforts, alongside France and other European allies, to chart a credible path forward.
The goal is clear: a durable peace that not only sees European nations stepping up military support but also ensures the security framework is underwritten by the United States.
The Fear of a Temporary Truce
The underlying concern, shared by both the UK and Ukraine, is that any hastily brokered truce may amount to little more than a strategic pause—allowing Russian President Vladimir Putin the time to rearm before launching another invasion. Without a firm US commitment, Starmer and Zelenskyy worry that Europe alone may not be able to deter Moscow’s ambitions.
This fear prompted an emergency gathering of European leaders over the weekend at Lancaster House in London, where Starmer hosted discussions on how best to structure and reinforce any future peace settlement.
The central challenge remains securing Trump’s agreement to security guarantees that would make a renewed Russian invasion impossible. Yet, so far, the former president has shown little inclination to commit to any boots on the ground except of some form of peacekeeping mission but only after the deal has been reached.
What Does This Mean for Special Relationship?
Historically, the United States has been the UK’s closest and most significant security ally. The “special relationship” has meant daily cooperation on defense, intelligence, and security matters. But Trump’s reluctance to provide guarantees for Ukraine has forced European leaders to reassess Washington’s role in shaping the continent’s security future.
London, for its part, is making clear that it is prepared to go beyond mere diplomatic maneuvering. The UK is willing to provide forces—including ground troops, RAF fighter jets, and Royal Navy assets—to ensure Ukraine remains defended.
However, Starmer has been forthright that this will require a multinational commitment. Any robust security arrangement must include the United States, both in terms of military capabilities and as a deterrent against future Russian aggression.
Starmer’s ‘Coalition of the Willing’
Europe, Starmer warned over the weekend, stands at a “crossroads in history.” Addressing world leaders on Sunday, he made a direct appeal for nations to “step up” and take responsibility for securing a lasting peace in Ukraine. His vision is clear: a coalition of nations willing to put tangible military resources on the line.
That coalition, however, is still in its infancy. The size, scope, and structure of the force being proposed remain undefined, with key details contingent on which nations are willing to contribute and what capabilities they can bring to the table.
The Prime Minister has made clear that Britain will play a leading role, but the overarching question remains whether Trump will join in and under what terms as the U.S. is interested in providing “economic guarantees” and having Europeans take responsibility for their security guarantees instead.
