At the White House on Monday, Trump touted France as America’s “oldest ally” while outlining an ambitious U.S. push to broker peace in Ukraine. Fresh off a meeting with Macron, he asserted that the talks were designed to end the “gruesome and ugly war” not seen since World War II.
He noted his satisfaction that Macron shared his belief that Europe must assume a greater security burden. Emphasizing a strategic financial pivot, Trump highlighted that the U.S. stance is centered on “recuperating” the funds provided to Ukraine in military support, with rare earth minerals playing a pivotal role. The agreement, reportedly, has been made and Trump is soon to have a one-on-one meeting with Zelenskyy.
Reflecting on the recent peace talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia, former President Donald Trump described the meeting as “a fantastic one” and asserted that President Putin is eager to make a deal. According to Trump, there had been no communication between the United States and Russia under Biden—with Russia not responding to anyone—and he recalled that one of his first calls was to Putin.
“We were treated with great respect,” Trump said of Russia. He added that his ” people are dealing with him [Putin] constantly”, emphasizing a level of persistent, behind-the-scenes engagement that he believes is key to resolving the conflict. Trump indicated that the primary aim is to either secure a direct agreement or establish a ceasefire as an interim step.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron offered his perspective. He warned that any peace agreement must not signify surrender for Ukraine, insisting that Ukrainian sovereignty must remain intact. Macron stressed that “peace as soon as possible” and a “lasting, solid peace” are the mutual goals of European leaders—a vision that seeks stability without compromising the country’s independence.
“We have committed to building a lasting peace as Europeans. We have committed to being stakeholders and in these security guarantees, we are well aware that Europeans need to do more for security in Europe, for defense in Europe,” said Macron
Macron was asked to give advice to Trump regarding Putin. “I will never give any advice to Trump,” he said.
Macron noted that his experience with Putin hold a general view that discussions are inevitable, especially when there is a disagreement. He added that his encounters with the Russian leader were not positive. “Because of the lack of guarantees, and especially security guarantees, President Putin violated this peace,” he said.
Macron further explained that he had held several discussions with President Putin—including a total of seven hours of talks in early 2022 before the attack was launched.
“He denied everything, but we didn’t have security guarantees. So this is why being strong and having deterrence capacities is the only way to be sure it will be respected. And I insisted on that. And this is why I believe that the US has the capacity to do so,” said Macron.
When asked what makes him trust Putin, Trump said, “it’s very much the benefit of Russia to make a deal.” He added that there is “tremendous distrust on both side” and reiterated that he truly believes that Trump wants to make a deal.

In the Oval Office ahead of a press conference, Trump said: “The first thing that we want to do, the first element of the overall transaction is ending the war. But just as we’re doing with Ukraine, we could do some economic development in terms of Russia and getting things that we want.”
When asked about the United States’ vote against UN resolutions concerning Ukraine, he declined to comment. “I would rather not explain it now, but it’s sort of self-evident,” he added.
On his mission as a peacemaker with Russia, Trump said that “at some point” Russia would agree to a ceasefire. During a G7 call, he noted, “There was great unity in that room today.” Asked whether Putin would accept European troops as peacekeepers, Trump replied, “Yeah, he will accept that. He has no problem with it.”
