Lula revealed that he had a “long conversation” with President Biden, where the two heads of state discussed, among other things, the war in Ukraine and how the nations could collaborate to bring this war to an end.

Speaking in front of the West Wing of US-Brazil relations, Lula said, “It is very important that we are together.”

Lula revealed that he and Biden talked through “the need to create a group of countries that are not directly or indirectly involved in the war with Russia to find a way to make peace.”

Lula expressed his commitment to the cause and stated that he is “convinced” that the nations must find a way to “end this war.”

“You need to have partners able to build a group of negotiators with credibility on both sides who can end the war,” he added. Lula noted that he has discussed the plan with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ollaf Sholtz, Chancellor of Germany.

“I felt the same concern from President Biden because nobody wants this war to continue and it is necessary to have partners capable of building a group of negotiators that both sides believe in and that both sides can understand and end this war. The first thing is to end the war, then it is to negotiate what will happen in the future, but you have to stop shooting if there is no solution,” said Lula.

Lula acknowledged journalists in front of the West Wing for doing their job. “I would like to congratulate you because this job as a journalist must be very complicated, being in the cold like this, waiting to ask a question,” he remarked. “Journalism is a profession that should pay well.”

The Brazilian president arrived with his wife, Janja da Silva, on Wednesday evening in Washington DC and he stayed at the historic Blair House.

Yesterday morning he met with Senator Bernie Sanders, and later with representatives Sheila Jackson-Lee, Pramila Jayapal, AOC, and Ro Khanna.

This was Lula’s 7th visit to the White House. He was welcomed by President George W. Bush four times, 2002 as president-elect, 2003, 2007, and 2008, and by Barack Obama twice, in 2009 and 2010.

This visit marked the first time President Biden welcomed a Brazilian president to the White House. He had a bilateral meeting with Bolsonaro last year on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas, in Los Angeles.

The last time a Brazilian President met an American President in the White House was almost three years ago – when President Donald Trump welcomed Bolsonaro in 2019. Before that, Obama welcomed President Dilma Rousseff in 2015.

The Price of Proximity to Trump

As Chris LaCivita’s work in Republika Srpska and new allegations involving money and access in Trump’s orbit make headlines, Ksenija Pavlovic asks a more interesting question: What do foreign clients believe proximity to an American president can actually buy?

Washington has its own rules, although, like most rules involving power, nobody bothers to write them down. One of them is this: a foreign country can spend years being almost completely invisible in Washington until, suddenly, someone discovers it can be useful in a political fight at home. And just like that, everybody becomes an…
