After two decades as a leader of the House Democrats, Nancy Pelosi is stepping down from her congressional leadership role.

“I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress,” announced Pelosi on Thursday. She is leaving the post for the new generation of leaders who, according to Pelosi, are ready to “shoulder this awesome responsibility.”

Pelosi said, no matter what title has been bestowed upon her, the biggest honor of her life was to serve the people of San Francisco.

“My friends, no matter what title you all, my colleagues, have bestowed upon me, speaker, leader, whip, there is no greater official honor for me than to stand on this floor and to speak for the people of San Francisco,” Pelosi could not withhold strong emotions.

In her speech, Pelosi mentioned her “beloved” husband, Paul, who was assaulted at their home in San Francisco last month.

“For my dear husband Paul, who has been my beloved partner in life and my pillar of support, we’re all grateful for all the prayers that well wishes as he continues his recovery. Thank you so much,” she said.

Leader Kevin McCarthy is the top candidate to become the speaker in the next Congress after Republicans won the House majority on Wednesday.
