President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to prepare for “possible action” in Nigeria following reports of attacks on Christians, saying the United States could halt all aid if the violence continues.
“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote on social media.
He warned that any U.S. military response would be “fast, vicious, and sweet,” urging the Nigerian government to act quickly to protect Christian communities.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth replied directly to Trump’s post, saying “Yes sir,” and confirming that the Pentagon was “preparing for action.”
“The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria — and anywhere — must end immediately,” Hegseth wrote on X. “Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
The president’s statement came one day after the administration officially listed Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” for violations of religious freedom. The classification places Nigeria alongside countries such as China, Cuba, and North Korea that face scrutiny over the treatment of religious groups.
