Good Morning DC,

Peter Navarro, a former White House official in the Trump administration, will be sentenced today on two charges of contempt of Congress. Navarro refused to comply with a subpoena related to January 6.

Prosecutors have requested that District Judge Amit Mehta impose a six-month prison sentence for Navarro along with a $600,000 fine.

Let’s get you caught up with the news of the day.

President Biden is going to Minnesota today where he will be holding a speech about Investing in America and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Gun violence remains the leading cause of death of children in America. The White House is implementing three measures to enhance the safe storage of firearms, with a specific focus on protecting children.

  • The Department of Education is set to send a letter to school principals nationwide, emphasizing the significance of safe firearm storage.
  • Additionally, the Department of Education will introduce a new communication template designed for principals and school leaders to effectively engage with parents and families regarding the importance of secure firearm storage.
  • Department of Justice (DOJ) will release a guide to safe storage of firearms in order to provide subject matter expertise on different types of storage devices and best practices for safely storing firearms.

Following the New Hampshire primaries, the Biden campaign is intensifying its critique of MAGA Republicans, central to President Biden’s message.

According to Biden-Harris 2024 Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the core theme of the President’s re-election bid is the assertion that Trump successfully solidified the MAGA faction within the Republican Party and is now pursuing an “extreme” agenda.

The Biden campaign aims to convey to Americans that there are two competing visions “that could not be more different.” Chavez Rodriguez emphasizes that the MAGA agenda is rooted in “revenge and retribution,” with Trump spending evenings on “personal grievances,” against Nikki Haley. In contrast, the Biden campaign wants voters to know they are approaching the General Election with a message of party unity and an optimistic outlook.

Biden-Harris 2024 Campaign Cochair Congressman Cedric Richmond goes further, characterizing MAGA Republicans as “extreme” and “dangerous” and Donald Trump as a “losing candidate who has cost their party election after election.”

Richmond contends that the MAGA agenda epitomizes the “very worst of our politics,” citing Trump’s efforts to “undermine free and fair elections” and “exact retribution on his political enemies” as prime examples.

The Biden campaign is striving to replicate its success among specific voting blocs that played a crucial role in the 2020 election. These targeted groups include voters of color, young voters, suburban voters—particularly focusing on suburban women across expansive suburban areas—and rural white working-class voters in battleground states.

Meanwhile, in the Trump camp…

Maine’s Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. Last week, Bellows sought the high court’s consideration of her previous decision to remove former Trump from the state’s primary ballot based on the 14th Amendment.

“The Secretary of State suggests that there is irreparable harm because a delay in certainty about whether Trump’s name should appear on the primary ballot will result in voter confusion. This uncertainty is, however, precisely what guides our decision not to undertake immediate appellate review in this particular case,” stated the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

In response to the decision, Trump Spokesman Steven Cheung expressed confidence in President Trump’s belief that the United States Supreme Court will ultimately address and dismiss what he referred to as “meritless, sham ’14th Amendment’ cases.” Cheung added that President Trump is committed to fighting these challenges at every juncture and “Make America Great Again!”

The Trump campaign is turning its focus to South Carolina, launching an aggressive attack on Nikki Haley. Former President Trump declared on Truth Social that individuals financially supporting Nikki Haley “will be permanently barred from the MAGA camp.”

According to Steven Cheung, Nikki Haley is perceived as “kiss of death” to the America First movement. Cheung claims that Haley symbolizes a candidate who would be influenced by establishment and take directives from the Lincoln Project Never Trumpers, who, in his view, suffer from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Nikki Haley is not holding back in responding to Trump’s criticism, labeling him as “insecure” and expressing that he feels “threatened” by her.

“We got out there, we did our thing and we said what we had to say, and then Donald Trump got out there and just threw a temper tantrum. He pitched a fit. He was insulting. He was doing what he does, but I know that’s what he does when he’s insecure. I know that’s what he does when he is threatened, and he should feel threatened without a doubt,” said Haley in South Carolina.

Republicans in both the House and Senate are aligning themselves with former President Trump. This includes Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who seems to be more open to cooperating with Trump and acting in line with what he wants.

This fact alone will affect the congressional dynamics especially regarding the border deal.

Considering Trump’s staunch rhetoric on border security, it is likely that Republicans in both chambers will be less inclined to engage in bipartisan deals with Democrats on immigration-related matters.

The influence of Trump’s hardline stance on the border and immigration is likely to shape the Republican agenda on the US Capitol and approach to negotiations with Democrats.

The US has strongly condemned the shelling of a UN compound in southern Gaza that occurred yesterday. The compound served as a shelter for tens of thousands of people.

Zelenskyy is calling for an international investigation into the circumstances surrounding the downing of a Russian aircraft reportedly carrying 65 Ukrainians for a prisoner exchange.
