Good Morning DC,

Oppenheimer clinched significant wins at the Oscars. During the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, the three-hour biopic secured seven Oscars.

“We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world,” Murphy remarked in his acceptance speech.

Are the Oscars getting too political?

Let’s get you caught up with the news of the day.

President Biden sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister, urging him to pay closer attention to the innocent lives lost in Gaza.

Today, the White House will commemorate the third anniversary of the American Rescue Plan, signed into law by President Biden on March 11, 2021. The United States has witnessed the most robust recovery globally in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The White House is set to release:

  • “Before and After the American Rescue Plan”: a documentation of economic challenges pre-dating the American Rescue Plan and the current state.
  • “Top Highlights from the Policies of the American Rescue Plan”: emphasizing key impacts of the American Rescue Plan over the past three years.

President Biden is scheduled to visit Manchester, New Hampshire today to outline his strategy for reducing healthcare costs, including urging Congress to enact three critical policies:

  • Enforce a $2,000 cap on prescription drug costs and limit insulin prices to $35 for all, not just Medicare beneficiaries.
  • Permit Medicare to negotiate prices for a minimum of 50 drugs annually.
  • Sustain low ACA premiums by permanently implementing enhancements to ACA coverage slated to expire in fall 2025.

Following the State of the Union address, the Biden campaign successfully raised $10 million in contributions for the 2024 election.

Over the weekend, at the rally in Rome, Georgia, Trump criticized Biden’s State of the Union address as overly “partisan” and “hate-filled” angry rant.

Trump seeks to broaden his voter base by appealing to never-Trump Republicans, “disillusioned” Democrats, and Independents to join the “Make America Great Again” movement.

“If you’re a disillusioned Democrat, of which there are many today, I extend an open hand, an open invitation, and I ask you to join us on the noble quest of saving our country,” Trump extended his invitation.

“To all Americans, whether you are a Republican, an independent or a disillusioned Democrat, of which there are many, all you had to do was watch that horrible State of the Union. That was the worst president in history making the worst State of the Union speech in history.”

Trump

Neither Trump nor Biden can secure victory in the election without attracting some portion of the vote that has not traditionally been theirs. Bill Maher has proposed the idea that Biden should run on a bipartisan ticket with Nikki Haley to potentially garner some Republican support.

Congress successfully averted a partial government shutdown. On Friday, the Senate passed the $460 billion-plus FY2024 appropriations minibus package. President Biden swiftly signed it into law on Saturday.

Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.) faced criticism following her State of the Union response, where she invoked a story of sexual violence that occurred two decades ago in Mexico to criticize President Biden.

Biden, said that he didn’t “quite understand” the connections she was making.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is slated to hold an open hearing on global threats.

Across the pond, news agencies including Getty Images, AFP, Reuters, and the Associated Press have withdrawn a picture of the Princess of Wales over concerns that it may have been manipulated.

PRINCE OF WALES/KENSINGTON PALACE

The decision was made due to an “inconsistency in alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand.” Kensington Palace has declined to comment.

This photo, released by Kensington Palace, marks the first official image of the Princess of Wales since her abdominal surgery in January.

The United States has been evacuating diplomats out of embassy in Haiti as the country descends further into violence.

Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs and Special Representative to the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, is on a diplomatic mission spanning Belgium, Kosovo, Austria, and Montenegro from March 10-18, 2024. The trip aims to reinforce America’s steadfast commitment to the Western Balkan nations in their pursuit of Euro-Atlantic integration.

During his visit to Belgium, Escobar is slated to engage with EU Special Representative Miroslav Lajčák and other key figures from the European Union and NATO.

In Kosovo, Escobar will hold meetings with governmental officials, civil society representatives, and Serb communities. The focus will be on reaffirming unwavering US support for the EU-led Dialogue aimed at normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

A critical aspect of the agenda involves addressing the ramifications of the new regulations implemented by the Central Bank of Kosovo on cash operations. Escobar will advocate for measures to ensure seamless fulfillment of the citizens’ needs without any disruptions.

Austria will host discussions between Escobar and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). Topics will include scrutinizing Serbia’s recent December elections and the forthcoming municipal elections in Serbia and national elections in North Macedonia.

Wrapping up his itinerary, Escobar will journey to Montenegro to underscore US backing for a democratic Montenegro deeply entrenched in the Euro-Atlantic community. Meetings with Montenegrin government officials, civil society actors, and business leaders will accentuate this support.

And that’s a wrap for this Monday morning March 11, 2024. Good Morning DC will be back tomorrow  to provide you with a front-row seat to the ever-evolving landscape of American politics under President Joe Biden.
