Alina Habba defended Elon Musk’s directive requiring federal employees to submit a weekly summary of their accomplishments, saying the mandate from President Donald Trump is clear. According to Habba, those who do not answer Musk’s email and state what they are doing will be held accountable.
The Trump administration has not backed down from the directive despite pushback from some federal employees. Under the policy, workers must send an email with five bullet points summarizing their achievements each week. Trump has reinforced the message yesterday, warning that employees could be “semi-fired” or “fired” if they fail to respond.
Speaking outside the West Wing on Tuesday morning, Habba defended Musk’s request, which has been approved by the president. She clarified that some departments handling highly classified information would be exempt, but others would be required to comply.
“There’s no question that every single Cabinet member, every single person that was put into this administration wants the American people working, wants people back to work, wants to stop the Zoom calls, and wants to stop people from double-dipping and having two jobs with taxpayer dollars,” she said.
Habba confirmed that she had also received the email and had no issue responding.
“President Trump knows what I do every single day, so for me to answer that email is incredibly easy,” she said.
“Look at all of you!,” she continued, pointing at the press. “Standing here, asking me why people are upset to answer to their boss—the American people and the President of the United States—what you’ve done at work? What a ridiculous thing!”
Habba acknowledged that firings across federal government have already taken place. “Firing of people indeed has been happening,” she said. “It happens in every job.”
She then delivered a message from Trump: “If you’re not on an America First agenda, you’re not here.”
Habba reiterated that those who do not comply with the directive will face consequences.“You will be held accountable. You will lose your job if you are not working,” she said.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) had previously stated that failure to respond to the emails would not be considered a resignation.
“It’s like any job. We’re going to ask you what you’re doing. Each department is in charge. You have to look at what everybody is doing. You want to say that we’re just going to go in and do something careless? No, we don’t do things carelessly, but we are asking people to show us that you are working,” she said.
Habba also confirmed that each response would be reviewed. She emphasized that the purpose of the directive is to ensure accountability.
“We’re asking because we want to know,” she said.

There will be no “end of Iran”—at least not now—despite the sweeping rhetoric from Donald Trump earlier in the day.
