At the White House, what began as a cordial meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy quickly turned into a tense confrontation. The atmosphere in the Oval Office soured as Vice President J.D. Vance, a vocal skeptic of continued American aid to Ukraine, took the Ukrainian president to task in front of stunned journalists.
Vance, never one to mince words, accused Zelenskyy of turning his visit to Washington into a “publicity tour” and declared it was “disrespectful” for him to “litigate in front of the American media.”
Trump himself was no more conciliatory. “You’re not really in a good position right now,” he told Zelenskyy bluntly, before warning that the Ukrainian leader was “gambling with World War III.”
The confrontation escalated when Vance pressed Zelenskyy further: “Have you said thank you once? You went to Pennsylvania to campaign for the opposition.” The charge hung in the air, a stark reminder of how Zelenskyy’s support for Kamala Harris has not gone unnoticed in Trump’s circles.
Trump then turned to Ukraine’s battlefield difficulties. “You’re running low on soldiers,” he observed. “And then you’re telling us you don’t want a ceasefire.”
Zelenskyy, clearly flustered, tried to respond, but Trump was on a roll. Raising his voice, he began: “Let me tell you, Putin went through a hell of a lot with me! He went through a phony witch hunt where they used him and Russia, Russia, Russia.”
The president continued, lambasting what he called a “phony” scandal involving “Hunter, Biden, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, shifty Adam Schiff.” The entire Russia investigation, Trump said, was nothing more than a “Democrat scam,” one that he and Putin had to go through together.
Pivoting back to the matter at hand, Trump insisted that while Vladimir Putin may have broken agreements with Obama and Bush, and may well have disregarded Biden, “He didn’t break it with me. He wants to make a deal,” he asserted.
Then came the ultimatum. “The problem is, I’ve empowered you to be a tough guy, and I don’t think you’d be a tough guy without the United States,” Trump told Zelenskyy. “And your people are very brave, but you’re either going to make a deal or we’re out, and if we’re out, you’ll fight it out. I don’t think it’s going to be pretty, but you’ll fight it out.”
With that, the room fell into an uneasy silence. Trump, still unsatisfied, drove his point home once more: “You don’t have the cards, but once we sign that deal, you’re in a much better position. But you’re not acting at all thankful. And that’s not a nice thing. I’ll be honest. That’s not a nice thing.”
Whether Zelenskyy had expected such a dressing-down or not, Trump’s message in front of TV cameras was unmistakable: no gratitude, no deal.

Trump’s Inner Circle Brings Its Own Explosives
In Trump’s world, even revenge needs an audience. And what a week it has been! The scandals. The leaks. The spectacle of Trump’s inner circle turning on one another. It is beginning to look rather like the first Trump term all over again. In the Royal Court of MAGA, everyone has a history, everyone has…
Why Elon Musk Is Spending Millions to Defend Texas Republicans
Why does a Republican Party that has dominated Texas politics for decades need the world’s richest man to spend so much money defending its hold on the state? Guilfoyle Exit Comes as Congressional Scrutiny Widens Across the Balkans
Donald Trump could not quite fall back on his usual “I don’t know her” line of defense. Kimberly Guilfoyle had, after all, been engaged to his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., for years. This was no fleeting Mar-a-Lago acquaintance. Guilfoyle had spent years at the family’s side, campaigning for Trump through indictments, political calamities and…
The Price of Proximity to Trump
Washington has its own rules, although, like most rules involving power, nobody bothers to write them down. One of them is this: a foreign country can spend years being almost completely invisible in Washington until, suddenly, someone discovers it can be useful in a political fight at home. And just like that, everybody becomes an…
What Power Looks Like When Nobody Is Watching
Politics is complicated. Covering an American president even more so. What I know and what I do not know is sometimes simply a matter of what I decide to publicize. Publicize is the word of the century—or perhaps the word of politics itself. Last week, I was in New York for UN week. One morning,…
