On his second day in office, President Trump has terminated Secret Service protection for his former national security adviser John Bolton.

The former adviser, who served in the Trump administration before a public and acrimonious split, took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the move.

“I am disappointed but not surprised,” Bolton said, referring to President Trump’s decision to terminate his protection. “I am disappointed but not surprised,” Bolton said in response to the termination. Despite his disagreements with President Biden’s national security policies, Bolton noted that Biden extended his Secret Service protection in 2021.

Bolton pointed to ongoing threats against his life as evidence that the protection remains necessary. In 2022, the Justice Department filed criminal charges against an Iranian Revolutionary Guard official, accusing him of attempting to hire a hitman to assassinate Bolton.

“That threat remains today, as also demonstrated by the recent arrest of someone trying to arrange for President Trump’s own assassination,” said Bolton. “The American people can judge for themselves which president made the right call.”
