As a debate over bathroom access unfolds on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Mike Johnson has voiced his support for a measure by Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina to ban transgender individuals from using women’s bathrooms in the U.S. Capitol.

In a statement addressing the use of single-sex facilities within the Capitol complex, Johnson asserted that “all single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex.”

The Speaker underscored a little-known detail: each Member’s office is equipped with its own private restroom, and unisex facilities are readily available throughout the Capitol.

“Women deserve women’s-only spaces,” Johnson declared.
