In a vibrant display of cultural appreciation, Mayor Eric Adams has designated February 26 as Serbian Heritage Day in New York City, recognizing and honoring the invaluable contributions of the Serbian-American community who pursued their own American dream.
This proclamation sets the stage for a momentous Serbian flag ceremony to be held at Bowling Green Park this coming Monday. The announcement extends a warm invitation to all New Yorkers to join in the festivities beginning at 10 am on February 26.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, Counsel General Vladimir Bozovic of the Counsel General of the Republic of Serbia will stand alongside Mayor Adams during the flag-raising ceremony. This marks a monumental moment as it is the first time that Serbian Heritage Day is officially proclaimed in New York City, and the Serbian flag will be ceremoniously raised in the presence of both Adams and Bozovic.
“Serbian Americans have long strengthened the five boroughs, and they will continue to play a key role as we take bold steps to move our global city forward. Together, we will continue work to ensure that the five boroughs remain an inclusive and dynamic center of opportunity for all,” said the proclamation.
The proclamation eloquently highlights Serbia’s resilient history and vibrant cultural heritage, tracing back to its arduous struggle for autonomy from the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. Recognizing Serbia’s milestone achievement of international independence at the Congress of Berlin in July 1878, Mayor Adams pays homage to the nation’s enduring legacy.
From its majestic Byzantine and Roman architecture to its sumptuous culinary traditions, literature, and performing arts, Serbia’s cultural richness is celebrated in the proclamation. The festivities at Bowling Green Park offer an unparalleled opportunity for New Yorkers to deepen their cultural understanding and appreciation of Serbia’s heritage in the United States.
“I take enormous pride in leading a city with a dynamic Serbian population that has made enormous contributions to the fabric of our civic, cultural and economic life for decades,” stated Eric Adam in the proclamation ahead of the rising flag ceremony.
