The second Republican presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle is scheduled to take place at 9 p.m. Eastern Time tonight at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California.
Seven candidates are set to grace the stage, vying for the party’s nomination: North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.
In order to secure a spot in the second GOP debate, Republican candidates had to meet specific qualifying criteria. They were required to achieve a minimum polling threshold of at least 3% in two national polls or one national poll along with two separate polls conducted in early voting states, which include Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, or Nevada. These qualifying polls needed to be publicly released at least 48 hours prior to the debate and adhere to the standards set by the Republican National Committee (RNC).
Additionally, candidates were mandated to demonstrate a broad base of grassroots support by garnering a minimum of 50,000 unique donors, with the further requirement of having at least 200 donors from each of at least 20 different states or territories. Furthermore, debate participants were obligated to commit to a pledge affirming their support for the eventual Republican nominee.
Similar to the inaugural debate, it is confirmed that former President Donald Trump will not be in attendance.
California Governor Gavin Newsom was spotted in the spin room moments before the start of the second GOP presidential debate.
The two-hour televised debate will be simulcast on both the Fox News Channel and Fox Business.
