“The one thing that we won’t do, because it would be a terrible mistake, is to agree to an inflationary pay rise that means we’ll still be discussing inflation in a year’s time,” emphasized the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt. Speaking from Washington, where he was attending meetings with other international finance ministers, he stated that pay increases that contribute to inflation would have a more detrimental impact on the UK economy.
“If we adhere to the plan, we’ll lower inflation to below 3% this year, and then we’ll move on from this issue, which I believe is what the British people want the Government to do,” he added.
Recent figures have revealed that public sector strikes are genuinely affecting the UK economy. According to recent data, the UK experienced zero growth in its economy in the month of February, which was an unexpected result. This was accompanied by unexpectedly high inflation numbers, which remained above 10% during the same month. Statisticians attribute these outcomes to the ongoing public-sector strikes.
While acknowledging the impact of these strikes, Hunt cautioned that complying with demands such as the 35% raise for junior doctors would endanger the economy and result in longer periods of high inflation. However, he also expressed hope that the nurses abandoning their 19% pay demand could provide a basis for productive discussions, and the same could happen for the junior doctors.
The Chancellor also took issue with IMF economists, who have consistently predicted that the United Kingdom would become the worst-performing G7 major economy this year, as well as the G20.
He stated that these forecasts have been repeatedly underestimated and that he hopes the same will happen this time. “Britain is back,” he claimed, noting that the IMF is supporting his budget policies. However, people will keep a close eye on monthly figures to ensure they do not repeat the unexpected zero growth seen in February, which was attributed to the public-sector strikes.
