Scotland cannot hold an independence referendum without the consent of the UK government, the UK’s Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday.
“A lawfully held referendum would have important political consequences relating to the Union and United Kingdom Parliament,” noted Supreme Court President Lord Reed. “The Scottish parliament does not have the power to legislate for a referendum on Scottish independence, ” he ruled.
Reacting to the judgment that Scotland cannot hold the second independence referendum without the consent of the UK government, Nicola Sturgeon said she was disappointed by the decision. “This judgment raises profound and deeply uncomfortable questions about the bases and future of the United Kingdom,” said Sturgeon.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reacted to the decision by calling it “clear and definitive” and an opportunity for SNP to move on.
“Let me start by saying we respect the clear and definitive ruling of the supreme court. i think the people of Scotland want us to work on fixing the major challenges we collectively face,” said Sunak.
Election as a new path to Scottish independence
Nicola Sturgeon is now looking for an alternative path for her lifelong mission. Her plan B is to make the next General Election a “de facto referendum” on Scottish independence. She said she is looking for a “democratic, lawful and constitutional” way for the people of Scotland to express their will and therefore, she will count every vote for the SNP as a vote for independence.
“You can’t win 50% of the Scottish population support, you can’t win a referendum. That is an essential prerequisite of becoming independent, so anybody who says we can’t do this because we might not win, if we can’t win, we don’t deserve to be independent, ” said Nicola Sturgeon
If Sturgeon loses her bet in the next election, her political career will be over.
