Two of Spain’s biggest Hollywood stars have come together in the teaser trailer for “Official Competition”, an upcoming comedy slated to be one of Spain’s biggest releases of the year.

The film stars powerhouse actors Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, known for award-winning turns in the films of Pedro Almodovar. Despite their frequent presence in his films, the duo doesn’t often star in anything together.

In “Official Competition”, the actors grace the screen together for a send-up of arthouse cinema and the film festival circuit.

The movie opens on a billionaire businessman grappling with his legacy and desire for a sort of social prestige. To earn his wish, he hires famed filmmaker Lola Cuevas (Penélope Cruz) and two renowned actors.

The actors, Hollywood star Felix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and thespian Ivan Torres (Oscar Oscar Martínez) are both legends in their fields. Yet each has a massive ego– and the two don’t exactly get along.

Lola concots a number of increasingly eccentric challenges to make them face their feud, notably including what looks like a massive boulder dangling mere inches from the actors’ skulls. As the tasks continue, the actors must confront not only each other, but their own legacies.

The film is directed by Argentine filmmakers Marianho Cohn and Gaston Duprat, known for “The Distinguished Citizen” and other works, and written by the pair in tandem with Andres Duprat.

The film from the award-winning Mediapro Studio is produced by Jaume Rores and executive produced by Laura Fernández Espeso, Javier Mendez, Javier Pons, Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz and Oscar Martínez.

“Official Competition” will debut on screen in theaters across Spain, and is slated for release in Latin America. International sales will be handled by Protagonist Pictures.
