THE WHITE HOUSE

The Democratic Caucus holds a razor-thin majority, and the efforts to overturn the filibuster come from the top.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Despite western warnings, Russia begins moving troops to the northern border of Ukraine, leaving officials worried that conflict is just a matter of time.

*All this and more ahead!

It’s Tuesday, January 18, 2022, and there is really no big news coming out of the White House today, mostly because, since Biden came into the office, there are no leaks to fill up the news pages.

TODAY AT THE WHITE HOUSE

Will all 50 Democrats support changing the filibuster this week? Not so fast. Sinema and Manchin are becoming the two main roadblocks on every single one of Biden’s initiatives that he was hoping to make his legacy.

Vice President Harris did not hold her breath on Sinema and Manchin yesterday, stating, “I’m not going to absolve — nor should any of us absolve, any member of the United States Senate — from taking on the responsibility to follow through on the oath that they all took to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Schumer is supposed to call for a caucus meeting today to continue the persuasion, but even he knows that, with a razor-thin majority, the road ahead of the Democrats will be a lengthy one.

Today at the White House, Biden will receive the Weekly Economic Briefing in the Roosevelt Room. The rest of the day the President will be preparing for the press conference he will hold tomorrow. The White House requires rapid tests for everyone attending the news conference.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The White House strongly condemned Monday’s terrorist attack in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirate. In the attack, executed by the Houthis, three civilians were killed. “Our commitment to the security of the UAE is unwavering and we stand beside our Emirati partners against all threats to their territory,” Jake Sullivan said.

US warnings to Russia seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Russia has started to move their military troops to Ukraine’s northern border with Belarus for joint military exercises. The Western Alliance is growing concerned that the invasion of Ukraine is getting more likely with each day.

Blinken talked on the phone with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah. They talked about “Russia’s threats against Ukraine and the importance of dialogue to de-escalate the situation.” Blinken will host in Washington DC the fifth U.S.-Kuwait Strategic Dialogue.

And that’s a wrap for this Tuesday morning, January 18, 2022. Good Morning DC will be back tomorrow to bring you the latest first.
