Kellyanne Conway had several things to say this morning. During this brief gaggle, Conway talked about John Bolton’s book, how Trump is faring in the election polls, and the upcoming Tulsa rally.
Bolton’s Book
Kellyanne Conway: It’s very important to the nation’s security, not even the President himself, but for the presidency itself and the nation’s security to make sure the review processes have been completed.
Among the topics on her mind is that of John Bolton’s highly anticipated memoir, “The Room Where It Happened,” to be released next week.
On Tuesday, the Trump administration sued the former national security adviser in an attempt to delay the publication of his book detailing his time at the White House, alleging that the book contains classified information.
“It’s kind of remarkable to have a book be published while people are still in office, said Conway.
Bolton’s book confirms accusations at the center of Trump’s impeachment over his dealings with Ukraine, namely, that Trump told Bolton he wanted to continue freezing $391 million in assets in security assistance to Ukraine until he receives help from officials with investigations into Democrats, including the Bidens. Yet despite the information he holds, Bolton declined to testify before the House during the impeachment process.
The book is subjected to a government review, but the Justice Department have accused Bolton of short-circuiting the review process.
“It’s very important to the nation’s security, not even the President himself, but for the presidency itself and the nation’s security to make sure the review processes have been completed,” Conway said.
Iowa Poll
Iowa might no longer be a decisive win for Trump as it was in 2016. A new poll released Tuesday shows that the state is almost tied in its choice between Trump and Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden.
Back in 2016, Trump carried the state by 9 percentage points. Results from the Register’s Iowa on Tuesday show Trump leading by just 1 point—44% to 43%.
Conway does not seem unhinged by the poll’s results. She said, “I think what you’re going to see in many of these swing states is what we saw in 2016, which is Biden and Trump in relatively close proximity to each other, under 50% in most of these swing states.”
Conway also called national polls a “colossal waste of money,” thus why the Trump campaign never conducted one when she was campaign manager, despite Conway having founded The Polling Company in 1995.
Tulsa Rally
Trump will hold his first campaign rally since the pandemic started this Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, despite officials pleading him to cancel or move the event outdoors to stop the spread of COVID-19.
According to Conway, the president’s campaign will take precautions by giving attendees masks and hand sanitizer and conducting thermometer checks.
Conway said, “People are going to go if they feel comfortable going. So we always tell people, here’s the guidance, feel comfortable, don’t feel comfortable. We also know that people don’t want to be locked down forever. We see them peacefully protesting. We see folks doing many things.”
The rally was originally scheduled for June 19—Juneteenth—the day which marks the end of slavery in the U.S. and is a widely considered a major holiday. Trump’s decision ignited widespread condemnation, with many criticizing him for hosting a rally on a historically significant day for African-Americans in Tulsa, the site of one of the bloodiest outbreaks of racist violence in the country, and in the light of national protests surrounding systemic racism and police brutality. The rally was subsequently pushed back.
