On Monday evening at COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow., president Biden met with President Sauli Niinistö of Finland.

The White House said that President Biden “underscored his strong commitment to the bilateral relationship and welcomed continued close cooperation on common challenges, including global health and climate change.”

Finland made an ambitious commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.

The two leaders also discussed the security situation in the Baltic Sea and northern Europe, including Finland’s strong partnership with NATO.

Earlier today, Biden delivered remarks at COP26 apologizing to the world “for the fact the United States, in the last administration, pulled out of the Paris Accords and put us sort of behind the eight ball a little bit.”

According to Jake Sullivan, COP26 in Glasgow “is not about some new climate change agreement — we have the agreement; it’s the Paris Agreement — it’s about making the Paris Climate Agreement real, actually getting to the level of ambition required through action to actually hit the targets set out in Paris.”

Paris Agreement stipulated a commitment by developed nations to developing nations to mobilize $100 billion a year in climate finance internationally.  At the U.N. General Assembly, president Biden announced a doubling of the U.S. commitment, which will mean that the United States is contributing its share to hit that $100 billion figure.

President Biden’s final day at COP 26 will be tomorrow after which he is expected to return to Washington D.C.
