Senator Amy Klobuchar praises Joe Biden’s character and pushes for unity on the first night of the Democratic National Convention.
On the first night of the Democratic National Convention, Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota made an appearance to voice her support for Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden and call for unity.
Unity, as Klobuchar puts it, is “how we get stuff done” — an appeal to all viewers, conservative, moderate or progressive, to come together and vote Trump out of the office.
“But I want to be clear, unity isn’t about settling. It’s about striving for something more. It isn’t the end, it’s the means,” Klobuchar said.
Klobuchar makes appeal to rural Americans
Klobuchar echoed sentiments from her own presidential campaign, which ran from February 2019 to March 2020. As a moderate choice, Klobuchar championed rural issues like promoting agriculture and developing infrastructure.
On Monday, as Biden’s firm supporter, she referenced topics ranging from the crippling postal service, to George Floyd and trade wars.
“We need a president for the workers who’ve lost their jobs, because this administration is selling American workers out when we need to buy American for the farmers and manufacturers and the people of rural America, who are sick and tired of reaping what [Trump’s] sown,” said Klobuchar.
Like most speakers at the convention, Klobuchar emphasized Biden’s character, and not his policies. The running theme of the night was Biden’s deep empathy; words of endorsement from politicians showed alongside clips of Biden extending sympathy and words of hope to regular Americans.
Klobuchar highlighted Biden’s “scrappy working class roots” and “hardships.” She walked viewers back to the snowy day she announced her campaign on the banks of the Mississippi River and to the day her bid for election ended.
“You know, most candidates, when they end their campaign that day, is a hard one,” said Klobuchar. “For me it was a moment filled with great joy because the day I ended my presidential campaign was also the day I endorse Joe Biden.”
After she dropped out of the running to become president, Klobuchar extended an olive branch to Biden and his campaign, helping him win the primary in Minnesota, where Senator Bernie Sanders and other Democratic candidates had bigger campaign organizations.
Klobuchar said, “if you feel stuck in the middle of the extremes in our politics, if you are tired of the noise and the nonsense. You have a home with me, and you have a home with Joe Biden.”
